We propose a building a scientifically equipped, Polynesian double-hulled voyaging canoe. This would be a moving monument, literally, that combines ancient technologies of Polynesian voyagers with latest oceanographic and climate instrumentation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The communities engaged would be the Native Hawaiian and Pasifika communities in California (There are more Native Hawaiian people living in the mainland now than in Hawaii), as well as the seafaring and host communities around the world (we can provide more on this movement). Students would be involved from Black Like Water, Dr. Keolu Fox’s Polynesian journeys class, as well as potential community partners in the Native Hawaiian San Diego community, Kumeyaay community members involved with Hawaiian social movements, and Native Like Water nonprofit serving Indigenous youth in the San Diego area.
